What it means
Rest and recovery means treating rest as part of the work, not a reward you earn after it. Sleep, breaks, days off and holidays are what let your mind and body keep performing. Without them, energy runs down slowly, and you may not notice until it is low.
Think of a machine on your shop floor. It needs servicing or it breaks, and no one calls servicing a waste of production time. You are no different. Rest is the servicing that lets you run for years and not just for a few strong weeks.
Why it matters
A tired owner makes slower, poorer and more irritable decisions. You may work more hours and get less done. Over time, the cost shows up in health, family and the quality of your thinking. Business is long. If you burn out in year three, the plan for year ten does not matter.
When you get this right:
- Your thinking is sharper, so fewer expensive mistakes get made.
- You stay patient with your team and customers.
- You can keep up hard effort for years, not only for sprints.
How to use it
- Fix your sleep first. Choose a regular time to switch off work messages each night.
- Take one full day off every week, with no calls and no emails unless it is a real emergency.
- Add short breaks into your day. Step away from the desk for ten minutes after every long stretch.
- Plan time off in advance, in the calendar, before the busy months fill up.
- Build your business so it can run for a few days
Common mistakes
- Treating rest as laziness and being proud of exhaustion.
- Taking a holiday but staying on calls all day.
- Waiting until you are ill to slow down.
- Resting only when work is quiet, never when it is busy.
